The Forbury Clinic

Early detection, expert reassurance

Cancer Screening

The most effective approach to cancer prevention and early detection is a screening plan tailored to your individual risk.

At The Forbury Clinic, our consultant-led cancer screening programmes provide structured, personalised guidance to help you understand your risk and plan appropriate screening with confidence and clarity.

Why cancer screening matters

Many cancers can be treated successfully when found early. Screening helps spot risk changes long before symptoms develop, allowing you and your clinician to act early.

The Forbury Clinic’s approach brings together consultant expertise, hospital-grade laboratory analysis and the convenience of home testing — giving you the reassurance of specialist oversight paired with the ease of remote collection.

Our approach

Cancer screening is not about diagnosing disease — it’s about understanding your predisposition and supporting informed, preventive care.

Every programme begins with your personal profile: age, family history, ethnicity and genetic makeup.

We combine these insights with evidence-based testing to deliver results that are clear, personal and clinically meaningful.

Powered by the Polygenic Risk Score (PRS)

Our screening uses an advanced Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) – a simple, non‑invasive genetic test that helps predict your individual risk of developing certain cancers. PRS combines information from thousands of gene variations with personal factors such as age and background to provide a truly personalised risk profile.

This modern approach, backed by extensive research, supports tailored advice on prevention and early detection so that care can be guided by your unique genetics rather than general population averages.

What We Offer at The Forbury Clinic

Early detection starts with understanding your personal risk.
Our consultant‑led cancer screening programmes bring together clinical expertise, modern diagnostics and genetic insight to deliver precise, individualised prevention for men and women.

Personalised breast cancer screening and prevention

Breast cancer affects around 1 in 7 women in the UK during their lifetime. Although routine NHS screening begins at age 50, around 1  in  5 cases occur in women under 50.

Our service provides genetic‑based risk assessment and a personalised prevention plan for women aged 30 and above. It helps identify higher risks early, guiding when and how to begin screening — even years before standard NHS invitations start.

Personalised prostate cancer screening and prevention

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with more than 55,000 new diagnoses in the UK each year and around 12,000 deaths annually. Genetics play a significant role; roughly half of all risk is inherited, even without family history.

Our screening combines PSA testing, MRI and polygenic risk assessment to give each man a clear picture of his prostate health. Designed for men aged 40 and over, it complements routine screening and supports active, long‑term prevention.

How the process works

Once a test is arranged, a home collection kit is posted to you (or can be collected from the clinic).
Each kit contains:

  • Simple instructions,
  • All equipment required for a saliva sample
  • A prepaid envelope to return your sample securely to our accredited laboratory.

Results will be available approximately 6 weeks after they are received.

You will receive a confidential report explaining whether any relevant genetic markers have been identified.

If any actionable findings are present, our team will contact you to arrange an appointment with a specialist counsellor, who will discuss your results, what they mean and what follow-up is appropriate.

You only need to attend the clinic if results require further discussion or clinical review — offering both convenience and reassurance in one coordinated service.

Cancer Screening FAQs

  • Do I need to visit the clinic for this test?

Not unless your results show something that needs discussion — most people complete the test entirely at home

  • Is this the same as BRCA or other inherited genetic testing?

No. Personalised screening uses common genetic variations to support tailored screening decisions. Testing for rare inherited mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2 is separate and may be recommended for individuals with strong family histories or specific risk factors.

  • How long does it take to get the results?

Results are typically available within 6-8 weeks. A detailed report will be sent to you directly.

  • Is this a cancer diagnosis test?

No. These tests highlight inherited risk and guide future screening intensity.

  • Who should consider testing?

Anyone concerned about their cancer risk, particularly if they have a family history of prostate or breast cancer.

  • What happens if something is found?

If your test identifies any actionable findings, our team will contact you and arrange a follow-up appointment with a specialist counsellor.
