Urodynamics Testing in London

Urodynamics testing assesses how your bladder fills, stores and empties urine. It provides detailed measurements that can help identify the type and cause of urinary incontinence, allowing treatment to be matched more precisely to your symptoms.

What are urodynamic tests?

Urodynamics is a group of tests used to assess how well the bladder and urethra store and release urine. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body.

Rather than relying on symptoms alone, urodynamics provides objective information about bladder pressure, capacity and urine flow.

Different types of urinary incontinence can cause similar symptoms but require different treatment. Urodynamic testing can help establish whether leakage is linked to stress incontinence, an overactive bladder, difficulty emptying the bladder or a combination of factors.

The tests are carried out in clinic. They usually involve gently filling the bladder while measurements are taken, followed by passing urine into a specialist flow test. Your consultant will explain each stage clearly. Although the assessment is intimate, it is a routine procedure carried out with care for your comfort and dignity.

The results can help your consultant recommend the treatment most likely to be appropriate for you. It can be particularly helpful before considering surgery.

Measure, do not guess

What it checks

Urodynamics testing can improve treatment decisions in several ways.

Identifies the type of incontinence

It can help distinguish between stress, urge and overflow incontinence, which may have similar symptoms but need different treatment approaches.

Supports targeted treatment

The measurements help your consultant recommend the option most likely to address the underlying issue.

Helps inform surgery decisions

Testing can be particularly valuable before surgery, helping confirm whether a procedure is appropriate for your bladder function.

Who urodynamic testing may suit

Urodynamic testing is often recommended for people who:

  • Have urinary incontinence where the exact type is unclear
  • Have not responded as expected to initial treatment
  • Are being considered for surgery
  • Have a combination of urgency, leakage or bladder emptying symptoms
  • Need further assessment of how their bladder is functioning

What to expect

  1. Before the test
Your consultant will explain why urodynamics has been recommended and what the assessment involves. You may be asked to complete a short bladder diary beforehand and attend with a comfortably full bladder.
  2. The assessment
The bladder is gently filled while measurements are taken. You will then be asked to pass urine. Your consultant and clinical team will explain what is happening throughout and support your comfort and privacy.
  3. Results and plan
Your consultant will interpret the findings alongside your symptoms and medical history, then explain which treatment options may be most appropriate.

From measurement to treatment

Urodynamic testing provides objective data rather than relying on symptoms alone.

Not every patient needs this test. It is used when clarity is required, particularly before surgery or when previous treatment has not worked as expected.

Treatment is then matched precisely to the type of incontinence identified. This increases the chance of improvement and reduces the risk of unnecessary procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Is urodynamic testing uncomfortable?

The assessment is intimate but routine. Some people find parts of the test briefly uncomfortable. Your consultant and clinical team will explain each stage, work carefully and support your dignity throughout.

Why are symptoms alone not always enough to guide treatment?

Different bladder conditions can cause similar symptoms, such as urgency, leakage or frequent urination. Urodynamics provides measurements that can help clarify the cause and guide the right treatment.

Do I need to prepare for urodynamics testing?

You may be asked to complete a short bladder diary beforehand and attend with a comfortably full bladder. Your consultant will give you clear instructions before the appointment.

Will I receive the results on the same day?

Your consultant will explain when and how your results will be discussed. In many cases, the initial findings can be reviewed after the assessment, alongside your symptoms and medical history.
