Semen Analysis (Sperm Test) in London

A semen analysis, also known as a sperm test, is the main first test used to assess male fertility. It measures the number, movement and shape of sperm, alongside other features of the sample, providing valuable information through one straightforward test.

What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis is the standard first test in evaluating male fertility.

It involves examining a semen sample in the laboratory to assess several features that influence the chance of conception. The core measures include:

  • Sperm concentration
  • Sperm motility, which is how well sperm move
  • Sperm morphology, which refers to their shape and structure
  • Semen volume and other characteristics

Together these provide a clear overview of sperm quality.

Because sperm production fluctuates and can be influenced by factors such as illness or stress, the test is sometimes repeated to confirm findings. Your consultant will advise whether this is appropriate.

Although straightforward and non-invasive, semen analysis is highly informative. The results guide what happens next, whether that is reassurance, further testing or targeted treatment.

A clearer picture of sperm health

What it measures

A semen analysis examines several important features of a semen sample.

Count

The number, or concentration, of sperm in the sample.

Motility

How well sperm move. This can affect their ability to travel towards and fertilise an egg.

Morphology

The size, shape and structure of sperm, alongside the volume and other characteristics of the sample.

Who a semen analysis may suit

A semen analysis is usually the first step for men who:

  • Are part of a couple finding it difficult to conceive
  • Would like to understand more about their fertility
  • Are being assessed before or after fertility treatment
  • Have had a vasectomy reversal and need a semen sample assessed
  • Have been advised to have a sperm test as part of a wider fertility assessment

What to expect

  1. Providing a sample
You will be given clear instructions on how to provide a sample discreetly and privately. Your consultant will advise how long to abstain from ejaculation before the test.
  2. Laboratory analysis
The sample is assessed in a laboratory to measure sperm count, motility, morphology and other relevant features.
  3. Interpretation
Your consultant will explain the results in the context of your history. They will advise whether repeat testing, further investigation or any treatment may be appropriate.

Why choose The Forbury Clinic for semen analysis in London?

Why The Forbury Clinic
1

An informative first test

A semen analysis provides a useful starting point for understanding male fertility through a single sample.

2

Simple and non-invasive

The test requires a semen sample and does not involve a medical procedure.

3

Helps guide further care

The results can help determine whether further testing or assessment may be helpful.

4

Consultant-led interpretation in London

Your results are reviewed in the context of your individual history, rather than considered as numbers alone.

From test to plan

Semen analysis is rarely interpreted in isolation.

An abnormal result is common and does not automatically mean infertility. Findings may prompt:

  • Repeat testing
  • Hormone assessment
  • Examination for varicocele
  • Sperm DNA fragmentation testing

Treatment decisions are based on the full clinical picture rather than a single measure.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to prepare for a semen analysis?

You will usually be asked to abstain from ejaculation for a specified period before providing the sample, as this can affect the result. Your consultant will provide clear instructions when arranging the test.

Why might a semen analysis need to be repeated?

Sperm production can vary and results may be affected by recent illness, medication or other factors. A repeat sample may be recommended to give a more reliable understanding of sperm health.

What happens if my result is outside the expected range?

An unexpected result does not provide the whole picture or determine fertility on its own. Your consultant may recommend repeat testing, hormone tests, sperm DNA fragmentation testing, imaging or assessment for a varicocele, depending on your circumstances.

How are semen analysis results interpreted?

Your consultant will consider all the measures together, alongside your medical history and fertility circumstances. They will explain what the results may mean and whether any next steps are appropriate.
