EpiSwitch PSE Prostate Test London

The EpiSwitch PSE test is an advanced blood test used alongside a PSA result to provide additional information about prostate cancer risk. It combines PSA with five epigenetic markers, helping your consultant decide whether further investigation, such as an MRI scan or prostate biopsy, may be appropriate.

It is a simple blood test, interpreted as part of a wider consultant-led prostate assessment.

A clearer picture of prostate cancer risk

The EpiSwitch PSE test is an advanced blood test developed to add further information to a standard PSA test. PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a protein measured in the blood that can provide useful information about prostate health. However, PSA can be raised for reasons other than prostate cancer, including an enlarged prostate, inflammation or infection.

The EpiSwitch PSE test combines your PSA result with five epigenetic markers. Epigenetic markers are changes in how genes are regulated, rather than changes to the genes themselves. Together, these results provide an assessment of the likelihood of prostate cancer being present.

The test is designed to support clinical decision-making, not replace it. Your consultant will interpret the result alongside your symptoms, family history, prostate examination and any other tests that may be appropriate.

For some men, the additional information may help determine whether further investigation, such as a prostate MRI scan or biopsy, is needed.

A simple blood test in three steps

How it works

The EpiSwitch PSE test fits into a wider prostate assessment and begins with a single blood sample.

Consultation and blood sample

Your consultant will review your symptoms, PSA result and risk factors. A blood sample is taken for the EpiSwitch PSE test. If you do not have a recent PSA result, this may be arranged at the same time.

Laboratory analysis

The laboratory combines the PSA result with analysis of five epigenetic markers to provide an assessment of prostate cancer likelihood.

Your result and next steps

Once your result is available, your consultant will explain what it means in the context of your wider clinical picture and discuss whether any further investigation is appropriate.

Interpreted as part of your full assessment

What the result may mean

The EpiSwitch PSE test result is not considered in isolation. Your consultant will review it alongside your age, symptoms, medical history, PSA level and any examination or scan findings.

Low likelihood result

A low likelihood result may provide reassurance and can help inform the decision about whether further tests, such as an MRI scan or biopsy, are needed at that stage.

High likelihood result

A high likelihood result may indicate that further investigation is appropriate. Your consultant may recommend an MRI scan, biopsy or another next step based on your individual circumstances.

A consultant-led decision

No single blood test can diagnose prostate cancer on its own. Your consultant will ensure that the result is used appropriately within a clear diagnostic pathway.

Who is it for

The EpiSwitch PSE test may be helpful for men who:

  • Have a raised or rising PSA level
  • Are considering whether a prostate biopsy may be needed
  • Have urinary or other prostate-related symptoms
  • Have a family history of prostate cancer
  • Want more information before deciding on further investigation
  • Would like to discuss their prostate cancer risk with a consultant urologist

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the EpiSwitch PSE test?

Published studies have reported accuracy of around 94% when the test is used alongside PSA. No test provides certainty on its own, so your consultant will interpret your result alongside your symptoms, medical history and other relevant findings.

Does the EpiSwitch PSE test replace PSA testing or a biopsy?

No. The test is used alongside a PSA result and clinical assessment. It may help guide the decision about whether an MRI scan or biopsy is appropriate, but a biopsy may still be needed to confirm a diagnosis.

Is it just a blood test?

Yes. The EpiSwitch PSE test uses a single blood sample. Your consultant will advise whether a PSA test is also needed or whether a recent result can be used.

How long do results take?

Your consultant will explain the expected timeframe for your result when arranging the test, along with how your result will be discussed with you.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You are welcome to self-refer and arrange a consultation directly with our team.
