What is medical management of ED?

Medical management of erectile dysfunction uses prescribed medication to help improve erections. It is often a suitable first treatment option for men with ED linked to reduced blood flow, diabetes, medication, hormone changes or a combination of physical and psychological factors.

The most commonly used medicines are known as PDE5 inhibitors. These include treatments such as sildenafil and tadalafil, which work by increasing blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused.

For some men, tablets may not be suitable, may not provide enough improvement or may cause side effects. Other medical options can then be considered, including treatments applied directly to the penis or medication given by injection.

If blood tests suggest low testosterone or another hormonal issue may be contributing, your consultant will discuss whether this needs further assessment or treatment. Testosterone treatment is not appropriate for every man with ED and is only considered where there is a confirmed medical reason.

Medical treatment should always follow a proper assessment. Some ED medication may not be suitable for men taking certain heart medicines, including nitrates.

Treatment matched to the cause

How it works

Medical management of ED may involve one treatment or a combination of approaches.

Tablets to support blood flow

PDE5 inhibitor tablets can help improve blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection with sexual stimulation.

Alternative medical options

If tablets are unsuitable or have not provided enough improvement, your consultant may discuss other prescribed treatments, including local or injectable medication.

Underlying factors addressed

Your consultant will consider contributing factors such as diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, hormone levels, medication, stress and anxiety as part of your overall care.

Who this treatment may suit

Medical management of ED may suit men who:

  • Have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Would like to discuss tablet treatment for ED
  • Have found over-the-counter treatment unsuitable or ineffective
  • Have health conditions that may be affecting erections
  • Have erectile difficulties after prostate treatment or surgery
  • Would like a discreet consultant-led assessment before considering other treatment options

What to expect

  1. Confidential assessment
Your consultant will ask about your symptoms, general health, medication, lifestyle and any concerns about sexual desire, ejaculation or relationships. Blood tests may be recommended where appropriate.
  2. Treatment plan
Your consultant will explain the medication options that may be suitable, how they should be used and any potential side effects or interactions to be aware of.
  3. Review and adjustment
Your response to treatment will be reviewed. If the first option is not suitable or does not provide enough improvement, your consultant can discuss alternative medication or other ED treatments.

Frequently asked questions

What medication is used for erectile dysfunction?

PDE5 inhibitor tablets, including sildenafil and tadalafil, are commonly used for ED. Other treatments may be considered if tablets are not suitable or do not provide enough improvement.

Do ED tablets work straight away?

These medicines do not create an erection without sexual stimulation. The timing and effect vary depending on the medication prescribed, your health and individual response. Your consultant will explain how to use your treatment correctly.

Can I take ED medication if I have heart problems?

Some men with heart conditions can use ED medication, but it is not suitable for everyone. It must not be taken with nitrate medicines used for chest pain. Your consultant will review your medical history and medication carefully before prescribing.

What if tablets do not work for me?

There may be several reasons why tablets have not worked, including dose, timing, underlying health conditions or the cause of ED. Your consultant can review this and discuss alternative medical or non-medical treatment options.

Will I need blood tests?

Blood tests may be recommended to check for factors that can contribute to ED, such as blood sugar, cholesterol or hormone levels. Not every man will need the same tests.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You are welcome to self-refer and arrange a confidential consultation directly with our team.
