Intravesical Bladder Instillations in London

Intravesical bladder instillations are a treatment delivered directly into the bladder to support and protect its natural lining. They may be considered for people with recurrent urinary tract infections, persistent bladder discomfort or ongoing irritation.

Also known as bladder instillations, this treatment is carried out in clinic through a fine catheter and is often given as a short series of appointments.

What are intravesical bladder instillations?

Intravesical bladder instillations, also known as bladder instillations, involve placing treatment directly into the bladder rather than taking it as a tablet. This allows the treatment to act locally within the bladder, without relying on it travelling through the bloodstream.

They may be used to support the bladder’s natural protective lining, sometimes called the GAG layer. This lining can be affected by recurrent infections, ongoing inflammation or chronic bladder symptoms. When it is disrupted, the bladder may become more sensitive and prone to irritation.

For some people with recurrent UTIs or persistent bladder discomfort, instillations may be considered alongside other treatments. They can offer an option beyond repeated courses of antibiotics, depending on the cause of symptoms and the findings from your assessment.

Treatment is tailored to you and is commonly given as a short series of sessions. Your consultant will explain the likely schedule and review how you respond.

Treatment where it is needed

How it works

Delivering treatment directly into the bladder can provide local support in several ways.

Supports the bladder lining

Treatment may help support the bladder’s protective surface layer when it has been affected by recurrent or chronic symptoms.

May soothe irritation

For suitable people, bladder instillations may help manage discomfort and irritation linked to ongoing bladder symptoms.

Targeted delivery

The treatment is introduced directly into the bladder, rather than being taken as a tablet.

Who this approach may suit

Intravesical bladder instillations may be considered for people who:

  • Experience recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Have chronic bladder discomfort, irritation or inflammation
  • Have persistent urinary symptoms that need further management
  • Would like to discuss options beyond repeated antibiotic courses
  • Have been assessed as suitable by a consultant urologist

What to expect

  1. Assessment and testing
Your consultant will discuss your symptoms, medical history and previous treatments. They will confirm whether bladder instillations may be appropriate and explain what the treatment involves.
  2. The treatment
A fine catheter is gently passed through the urethra into the bladder. The treatment is then introduced directly into the bladder during a short clinic appointment.
  3. A short course of sessions
Instillations are often provided as a series of treatments rather than a single appointment. Your consultant will recommend a schedule based on your symptoms and response.
