Looking after your vaginal health

Many women notice changes to their vaginal and intimate health at different stages of life. These changes can be associated with pregnancy and childbirth, the menopause, hormonal shifts or ageing. They are common, but they do not need to be dismissed or managed alone.

Symptoms can include vaginal dryness, irritation, reduced lubrication, discomfort during sex, a feeling of looseness or reduced tone, and mild leakage when coughing, laughing or exercising.

Rather than viewing each symptom in isolation, we take a joined-up approach to vaginal and intimate health. A confidential consultation can help establish what is causing your concerns, identify whether any separate treatment is needed and create a care plan based on what you would like to improve.

What vaginal health covers

Concerns we can help with

Our service supports women with a range of vaginal, urinary and pelvic floor concerns.

Vaginal dryness

Dryness, irritation or discomfort, often linked to hormonal changes during or after the menopause.

Vaginal laxity

A feeling of looseness or reduced vaginal tone, which some women notice after childbirth or with age.

Comfort and intimacy

Discomfort during sex, changes in sensation or symptoms that are affecting confidence and intimate wellbeing.

Mild stress leakage

Small amounts of urine leakage during coughing, laughing, lifting or exercise. This can occur alongside changes to the pelvic floor.

How we assess vaginal and intimate health

Your first appointment is a private, unhurried consultation. Your consultant will listen to your concerns, ask about your symptoms and medical history, and discuss what you would like to achieve.

Getting to the answer

Consultation and symptom review

A sensitive discussion about your symptoms, including dryness, discomfort, changes after childbirth or menopause, leakage and the effect these are having on daily life.

Urine testing

If urinary symptoms or leakage are part of the picture, a urine test may be arranged to rule out infection or other causes.

Examination where appropriate

A gentle examination may be recommended to assess vaginal, pelvic floor or skin changes and to help identify the likely cause of your symptoms.

Further assessment where appropriate

Your consultant may recommend further investigation if symptoms suggest a condition that would benefit from separate assessment or treatment.

From assessment to treatment

The first step is understanding what is contributing to your symptoms. Your consultant will consider whether concerns are most likely to be linked to hormonal changes, pelvic floor function, urinary incontinence, a skin condition or another cause.

Treatment is then matched to the findings and your personal priorities. Some women benefit from simple measures, prescribed topical or hormonal treatment, or pelvic floor rehabilitation. Non-surgical procedures may be considered where appropriate. Your consultant will explain the options clearly, including what each treatment involves and what it may realistically help with.

Treatments for vaginal health

Treatment is tailored to you and may involve more than one approach.

Treatment

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Laser treatment may be considered for selected women with vaginal symptoms. Your consultant will discuss whether this is appropriate for you, what the procedure involves and the potential benefits and limitations.

First-line

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

A structured programme to support the pelvic floor muscles. This may include supervised exercises and, where appropriate, treatment using the EMSELLA chair.
