Vasectomy Procedure
A vasectomy is a highly effective form of permanent contraception for men who no longer wish to have children. It is a straightforward procedure performed under local anaesthetic, with a short recovery time.

Vasectomy Procedure Overview
Deciding to have a vasectomy is a significant personal choice, often considered when a man’s family is complete or he is certain he does not wish to have children in the future. It offers a reliable, permanent form of contraception, removing the need for ongoing birth control. At The Forbury Clinic, our consultant-led service provides vasectomy procedures in a discreet, supportive environment. Our experienced urologists use advanced techniques to ensure the procedure is safe and effective, with clear information and compassionate care provided throughout.

How Does a Vasectomy Work?
A vasectomy works by cutting or blocking the vas deferens. These are the small tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to be mixed with semen. Once these tubes are sealed, sperm can no longer reach the semen that is ejaculated during sex. The testicles continue to produce sperm, but the body naturally absorbs it.
The procedure does not affect your sex drive, testosterone levels, ability to have erections or the sensation of orgasm. The only change is that the semen will no longer contain sperm, meaning pregnancy will not occur.
What Are The Different Types of Vasectomy Procedures?
Conventional vasectomy:
Involves making one or two small incisions in the scrotum to access and cut the vas deferens.
No-scalpel vasectomy:
A newer technique that uses a tiny puncture instead of a scalpel. This method typically results in less bleeding, faster recovery and lower risk of complications.
There are two main types of vasectomy:
At The Forbury Clinic, our consultants will discuss the options with you and recommend the most suitable approach based on your individual needs and medical history.
Can a Vasectomy Be Reversed If I Change My Mind?
Vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of contraception. While reversal is sometimes possible, it is an extremely complex procedure and success rates vary depending on the time elapsed since the vasectomy and other individual factors.
If you are uncertain about your future family plans, it is important to discuss this with your consultant before proceeding. We will provide you with all the information you need to make a fully informed choice.
How Will I Know If The Vasectomy Was Successful?
After your vasectomy, it takes time for any remaining sperm to clear from your system. You will need to provide one or more semen samples in the weeks following the procedure to confirm that your semen is free of sperm.
Until you have received confirmation that your vasectomy is successful, you should continue using other forms of contraception. Our team will guide you through this process and provide clear instructions on what to expect.

How Long Does Recovery Take After a Vasectomy?
Most men recover quickly after a vasectomy. You may experience some mild swelling, bruising or discomfort in the first few days, which can be managed with rest, supportive underwear and over-the-counter pain relief.
Many patients are able to return to work and light activities within 2–3 days, but this varies based on the individual. It is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise and sexual activity for around a week to allow the area to heal fully.
Our team will provide personalised aftercare advice and remain available to support you throughout your recovery.
