Lumps & Bumps Ultrasound Services

Lumps and bumps ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique used to assess unusual swellings or masses under the skin. This quick and painless scan helps determine the nature of the lump, whether it is fluid-filled, solid or requires further investigation.

Overview of lumps and bumps ultrasound

A lumps and bumps ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging procedure used to assess abnormal swellings or masses beneath the skin. This scan provides detailed insight into the size, shape, and composition of a lump. It is commonly used to assess cysts, lipomas, swollen lymph nodes and other soft tissue abnormalities. At The Forbury Clinic, our expert Consultant Radiologists use advanced ultrasound technology to provide precise imaging and expert evaluation of your lump or bump.

What is a lumps and bumps ultrasound?

A lumps and bumps ultrasound is an imaging scan used to assess abnormal swellings or masses beneath the skin. It helps determine whether a lump is fluid-filled, solid or requires further medical investigation. This non-invasive diagnostic procedure provides fast and accurate results, aiding effective diagnosis and treatment planning.

Why would you need a lump ultrasound?

A lump ultrasound is recommended when a new or changing lump appears anywhere on the body, to assess its nature and potential cause. It can distinguish between benign cysts, fatty deposits or more concerning masses that may require further evaluation. Early imaging ensures accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment if needed. Depending upon where your lump is, you will be directed to a Consultant Radiologist who specialises in ultrasound of that body part.

What happens during a lump ultrasound?

During a lump ultrasound, the Consultant Radiologist will apply a small amount of gel to the skin and use a handheld probe to capture detailed images of the lump. Sound waves create real-time visuals, allowing the specialist to assess the lump’s size, shape and composition. As the probe moves over the area, different angles and depths are examined to provide a comprehensive view, ensuring an accurate assessment of the lump’s structure.

How long does a lump ultrasound take?

A lump ultrasound is a quick and straightforward procedure, usually lasting around 15 to 30 minutes. The exact duration may vary depending on the size and location of the lump, as well as the level of detail required for assessment. The Consultant Radiologist will typically explain the findings at the end of the examination, when you can ask questions. A formal report will also be sent to the medical doctor or healthcare professional who referred you and will discuss you care further.

Is a lump ultrasound painful?

A lump ultrasound is a painless and non-invasive procedure. The ultrasound probe is gently moved over the skin with a gel to capture clear images, causing no discomfort. In some cases, slight pressure may be felt if the lump is tender, but the procedure itself does not cause pain.

Can an ultrasound determine if a lump is cancerous?

An ultrasound can help assess whether a lump has characteristics that may indicate cancer, such as irregular shape, uneven borders, or unusual blood flow. However, while it provides valuable information, it cannot confirm whether a lump is cancerous. If further evaluation is needed, a biopsy or additional imaging tests may be advised.
